Question:
Hi Mark,
I have been at my company for five years now and am itching to look for another opportunity. I do not feel challenged anymore and am feel that I can earn a higher salary with the experience I have gained in the last five years at my current company. First, I am wondering if five years is a good amount of time to work at a company these days and if I am being foolish wanting to venture out at something different only after five years of working at my current employer. Second, should I consider the slow economy and stay put at my current job until the economy gets back to normal? Any advice would help!
Thank You.
Answer:
Two excellent questions, a number of people are wondering the very same issues that you are asking. Regarding length of time at a company 5 years is a healthy period of time to be with a company. It will be helpful if a promotion was also involved in this period of time. The average time in a position is much less than 5 years. Five years you should be able to show, stability, growth, and career development.
Regarding the economy; not everything is doom and gloom in today’s economy. There is a tremendous amount of activity in a number of areas. I would not worry about the economy in deciding to conduct a career search but would have more concern on how to conduct the search. How you market yourself is the key to your success.
